      The Motley Assembly, a farce, published in Mercy Warren () was sister of James Otis and wife of James Warren, both leaders in the early stages of the American Revolution. These plays of hers are of historical, not dramatic : Mercy Otis Warren. Mercy Otis Warren was born on Septem , the third of thirteen children and first daughter of Colonel James Otis (–) and Mary Allyne Otis (–). The family lived in West Barnstable, Massachusetts. Mary Allyne was a descendant of Mayflower passenger Edward Doty.

    Mercy Otis Warren, the author of The Group, was a sister of James Otis and the wife of James Warren. She was also a member of that band of patriots who fanned the spark of revolution into the American Revolutionary War. Mercy Warren, being an eighteenth century lady, would not speak out at public meetings, nor join riots, nor fight in the lines. She was the granddaughter of Pilgrim Richard Warren.
